How Veneers Can Brighten Your Smile and Boost Your Confidence

Dentists and patients alike love veneers. These wafer-thin, tooth-like shells, which match the color of your natural teeth, can fix a number of tooth imperfections, brightening your smile and boosting your confidence.

At CaliDental, with locations in Santa Maria, San Luis Obispo, Bakersfield, and Lompoc, California, our expert team of dental providers is proud to offer our patients customized porcelain veneers, helping you create the beautiful smile you’ve always wanted. Here’s how it works.

Dental veneers 101

Custom-made dental veneers, which are bonded to the front tooth surface, change the tooth’s size, shape, length, and/or color. They’re a durable and affordable alternative to a dental crown, a custom-made restoration that sits over the top of your tooth. Veneers don’t improve your tooth health by themselves, but because they resist acid and decay, they contribute to improved oral hygiene while at the same time giving your mouth a vibrant, bright look.

Dental veneers can be made either from porcelain or from resin composite materials, but we use porcelain for a number of reasons. First, porcelain veneers resist stains better than the resin ones do. Second, they’re stronger than resin. And third, they look more like your natural teeth because the material mimics the light-reflecting properties of natural teeth.

Veneers may be most useful for those who want a long-term solution to cosmetic concerns, but who don’t respond well to other types of treatments, such as teeth whitening or braces. Most veneers last 7-15 years, after which you need to get them replaced.

5 issues dental veneers address

People’s reasons for getting veneers are as varied as the individuals themselves, but those reasons tend to fall into five different groups.

1. Staining and discoloration

Tobacco of any type; drinks like coffee, tea, and dark soft drinks; and foods like berries and candies can take your teeth from dazzling to discolored in no time flat. In addition, as you age, the enamel that covers your teeth tends to thin, revealing the yellow-colored dentin underneath.

Professional teeth whitening can work wonders in many cases, but it doesn’t work for all forms of discoloration — especially staining that occurs inside your tooth due to medications or root canal procedures. Veneers, though, because they’re applied to the tooth’s surface, can brighten and whiten any tooth, no matter what the cause.

2. Uneven, gapped, or misaligned teeth

Orthodontic procedures, such as traditional metal braces or Invisalign®, take a long time, cost a lot, and don’t work for everyone. Veneers, though, can cover up irregular spacing and teeth with gaps between them, making them an easy and affordable alternative.

3. “Gummy” smiles

When you feel like the sight of your gums is overwhelming the size of your teeth, veneers can be a good solution. They lengthen and correct the shape of your teeth, creating a more proportioned look between teeth and gums.

4. Chips, cracks, and breaks

Many people use veneers to address cosmetic issues, but they can also address oral health concerns. When you chip or crack a tooth, the enamel covering your tooth becomes damaged, leaving the tooth open to bacteria and decay. By using a veneer to cover the crack or chip, you can help prevent such decay.

5. Damaged enamel

In addition to chipping or cracking, enamel can also wear down over time due to chewing, stomach acid from reflux (GERD), heavy-handed brushing, or highly acidic foods and drinks. A veneer placed over the surface can provide an extra layer of protection for a weak tooth.

If your self-confidence is taking a hit because of unsightly tooth discoloration or cracks and chips to the surface, veneers can be a good way to improve both the dental and psychological effects of the problems. How to Get the Most out of Your Dental Crown

Dental crowns — which completely encase the exposed portion of a tooth — are often used to strengthen or support a tooth that’s at risk. While crowns are sensible solutions, they require special care.
