IV Sedation

We understand that some patients may feel anxious or uneasy about dental treatment. That’s why our doctors and team are committed to creating a comfortable and positive experience for every visit. For those who need a little extra reassurance, we’re proud to offer sedation dentistry. Dental anxiety should never stand in the way of achieving the healthy, confident smile you deserve.

Customized sedation dentistry that is safe and effective

Sedation dentistry isn’t one-size-fits-all. There are various options available, and you and your doctor will work together to choose the method that best fits your needs. Your personalized treatment plan will prioritize both your comfort and your safety. On this page, we’ll focus on IV sedation—the deepest level of sedation available in our office.

How IV sedation dentistry works

This procedure requires you to be accompanied by an adult.

Upon arrival, our friendly team will greet you and escort you to a private treatment room. Your doctor will then gently insert an IV line and administer medication to place you in a deeper state of relaxation.

During the procedure, you’ll remain comfortable and unaware of the treatment taking place. Most patients wake up with little to no memory of the visit—and with a healthier, more confident smile. In many cases, we can complete multiple procedures, including complex smile makeovers, in a single visit (following a consultation).

You’ll receive thorough pre- and post-procedure instructions, including fasting guidelines and aftercare to ensure a smooth and safe recovery.

GA sedation appointments are scheduled in advance—same-day procedures are not available. Due to demand and limited availability, there may be a waiting list.

Common questions about sedation dentistry

We understand that you may have many questions about sedation dentistry before receiving treatment. Here are some of the most common questions and answers about sedation dentistry:

  • Will you administer GA (General Anesthesia) sedation at the first appointment?
No - we do require a full exam at the first visit before deciding if you are a good candidate for treatment under GA sedation.

  • Will GA sedation be administered at the first appointment?
No. A comprehensive exam is required at your first visit to determine whether you are a suitable candidate for treatment under GA sedation. Note that we don't administer GA sedation for minor treatment such as cleaning only.

  • Will my insurance cover GA (General Anesthesia) sedation?
We only accept Denti-Cal for GA sedation, which requires prior authorization. For all other insurance plans, GA sedation would be an out-of-pocket expense.
  • Is GA sedation available for both children and adults?
Yes, GA sedation is available for both children and adults. However, availability depends on the schedule, and same-day GA sedation appointments are not offered.

  • Will I feel anything during my treatment?

In most cases, patients do not feel anything. There is very little discomfort, and many patients wake up feeling relaxed and comfortable with almost no memory of the treatment.

  • Is sedation dentistry the same as being unconscious?

GA sedation involves putting the patient into a deep sleep-like state, during which they are completely unconscious and unaware of the procedure.

  • Is sedation dentistry safe?

Sedation dentistry is a safe and effective way for many patients to receive dental treatment. Before starting your treatment with IV sedation, your doctor will help you decide if IV sedation is right for your treatment.

  • How long will it take the sedation to wear off?

The time it takes for the sedatives to wear off depends on the dose you've received, how long your treatment is, and how quickly your own body can recover. Because sedation causes drowsiness, it is recommended that you have a family member or friend drive you to and from your appointment. After your treatment, you should not drive, drink alcohol, or operate machinery.

  • Am I a good candidate for sedation dentistry?

Any patient, from child to adult, who experiences dental anxiety may be a good candidate for sedation dentistry. If you have any of the following fears or concerns, ask your doctor about sedation dentistry as an option for your next dental treatment:

    • Extreme dental anxiety, or fear of visiting the dentist
    • Fear of needles and/or shots
    • Past traumatic dental experience
    • Overly sensitive teeth, a strong gag reflex, or trouble getting numb
    • Need for a more complex dental treatment
    • Self-consciousness about one's teeth
    • Desire for a more comfortable dental treatment

If you feel that you could benefit from sedation dentistry at your next appointment, please speak to your dentist.
